GAIA'S PLATE EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL

about this year's harvest 2024

2024 saw an abundance of olives on the trees which got us all producers excited. But we cannot control nature or the weather: lots of rain in September and October filled our olives with water which means a very low percentage of oil was squeezed out when they were harvested. Long story short: production was down 40%.

The good news is that the little oil we got is of exceptional quality, one of the best in the past few years: a truly Tuscan strong character, pepperiness yet a graceful balance. The slightly bitter after note is an indication of an excellent olive oil with the right amount of polyphenols which will keep fresh for a long time.

If you want to know more about this year’s harvest and why producers had to increase prices, here is a good article from The Olive Oil Times

Gaia’s Plate Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a blend of traditional Tuscan varietals: Frantoio, Pendolino, Moraiolo, Leccino and Mignola.

  • The olives are handpicked in November and milled within 24 hours of harvesting at a state of the art milling facility near the farm.

  • They are cold-pressed at temperatures below 27°C, in complete absence of oxygen to avoid oxidation

TASTING NOTES

Colour: Intense green.

Taste: Full-flavoured with crisp, fresh green vegetable notes, particularly artichoke, and a tasty vein of pungent pepperiness. A true Tuscan olive oil with a remarkably piquant distinctiveness and lingering aromatic notes.

Nose: Fruity with some green leaf aroma; clean-edged fruity fragrances of green olive, with nuances of artichoke and thistle

Pairing: wonderful drizzled directly on lightly-toasted artisanal bread and on raw vegetables. Add it as a finishing touch on soups, pasta or light fish
